AI visibility for law firms and legal services
"Do I need a lawyer specializing in labor law in Lisbon" is today a question that many people first ask an AI assistant, not a search engine. If your office is not part of that response, the consultation will not even happen.
Why legal matters require special care
Few sectors depend as much on trust and demonstrated expertise as the legal sector. Before contacting a lawyer, most people want to understand whether that firm actually handles the type of case they have - and that clarity is exactly what determines whether an LLM cites or ignores a firm.
The IPD-IA Portugal 2026 did not isolate legal as its own sector, but falls predominantly into Consultants/Professional Services - where 80% of the Portuguese companies analyzed were classified as only partially adapted, and none as prepared.

What LLMs value in a law firm
- Clearly delimited areas of practice. "Employment law and employment litigation" is cited with more confidence than "general law" - the specificity helps the model make the right match between question and office.
- Explanatory content about legal processes. Articles that explain, in accessible language, how a certain type of process works position the office as a citable reference source.
- Visible credentials and experience. Years of practice, representative cases (without violating professional secrecy) and associations with the Bar Association reinforce the entity's authority.
- Consistency of contact and location data. Essential in a sector where geographic proximity to the court or client is often a selection criterion.
- FAQ sobre processos comuns. Questions like "how long does a divorce by mutual consent take" answered in a clear and verifiable way.
Common mistakes on law firm websites
- Generic and extensive list of "areas of activity", with no in-depth content in any specific area - a sign of ambiguity, not breadth.
- Lack of educational content - the website functions as a business card, without material that demonstrates real knowledge of the subjects covered.
- Falta de schema markup jurídico (
LegalService,Attorney), que ajudaria a categorizar corretamente o tipo de serviço. - Lack of FAQ, leaving unanswered the most common questions that potential clients ask before booking an appointment.
Where to start
- Choose 2-3 priority practice areas and develop real in-depth content on each, rather than a long, superficial list.
- Create a FAQ section with the most frequently asked procedural questions in your area of activity.
- Implementa schema markup específico (
LegalService,Attorney) combinado com dados deLocalBusiness. - Audits the consistency of the office name, address and contacts between the website, the Bar Association and other professional platforms.
- Test realistic prompts ("lawyer specializing in [area] in [location]") to see if the firm already appears, and in what position.
